(PressZoom) - In another record breaking year for fundraising, the University of South Carolina reached $609 million raised in the Carolina’s Promise campaign. In fiscal year 2012, the school raised $146.8 million in gifts—a 20 percent increase over the record set the previous year.
“We set a new standard for fundraising in South Carolina, and Gamecock nation has answered the call,” said university president Harris Pastides. “Through their generosity alumni, students, parents, friends of the university, faculty and staff have joined our commitment to build healthier, more educated communities. At a time of strained public resources, these gifts support cutting edge research and help keep USC affordable and accessible—making USC the University for South Carolina.”
Throughout the Carolina’s Promise campaign, nearly 36,000 gifts have been made to support 3,200 existing scholarships and create 465 new ones.
In addition to scholarships, the campaign supports faculty research, faculty recruitment and retention, academic facilities and technologies, and the university’s endowment.
Michelle Dodenhoff, vice president for development and alumni relations, said the university has experienced five consecutive years of increased giving during the campaign, each year topping $100 million.
“While a $1 billion dollar campaign goal is ambitious, what impresses me the most is the magnitude of support from the Carolina family,” said Dodenhoff. “The number of scholarships created, faculty enhancements, buildings built, and programs established will be the true legacy of Carolina’s Promise.”
The public phase of the eight-year, $1 billion campaign kicked off Nov. 11, 2011 in Columbia followed by a worldwide launch May 10. The campaign will continue through summer 2015.
