(PressZoom) - On Saturday (June 9), Aviation Heritage Park will host its annual Hangar Party at the Bowling Green-Warren County Regional Airport.
The fund-raising event will feature many amazing American aircraft ranging from military warbirds to experimental civilian aircraft. As fun and exciting as it will be to see them in action and on display, one American warbird — a rare P-51C Mustang — will stand out from the others for two reasons: it has a bright red tail and it is a key part of an educational initiative to help people — particularly young people — understand and appreciate the history and legacy of the special group of black pilots who flew airplanes with bright red tails during WWII — the Tuskegee Airmen.
“We are honored to welcome the Commemorative Air Force’s Red Tail P-51 to our Hangar Party,” said AHP President Arnie Franklin. “Each year, we bring a unique aviation artifact to Bowling Green. This one flies!”
It will be joined by the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s new RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit, a customized 53-foot trailer with expandable sides that houses a 160-degree curved movie screen and seating for 30 in climate-controlled comfort. A 14-minute original movie called RISE ABOVE focuses on what the Tuskegee Airmen – pilots and their support personnel – had to overcome to be allowed to fly and fight for their country during World War II. It also features some great flying footage — in the Mustang — that is enhanced by the long curved screen.
Until it is moved to the airport, the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit will be on display (and free to the public) at Greenwood Mall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday (June 6-7) and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday (June 8). The exhibit will join the Red Tail P-51 for the Hangar Party.
Tickets for the event are limited and available online and at Ford’s Furniture, Barbara Stewart Interiors, Chuck’s Liquors in Bowling Green and at Ford’s Furniture and Bailey Gibson GMC in Glasgow. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 6-12.
