(PressZoom) - (Huntsville, AL) --Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville Hospital CEO David Spillers announced a new program within the Healthy Huntsville Initiative – the Huntsville Summer Slim-Down, an eight-week weight loss and fitness challenge for Huntsville families. Similar to Scale Back Alabama, this program is geared toward getting parents and children off the couch and into making healthy food choices.
“We had a great start to 2012 with our new Healthy Huntsville Initiative and Scale Back Alabama, and we don’t want to lose our momentum,” said Mayor Battle. “Summer provides an excellent opportunity for families to make changes in the way they eat and play. We are here to provide support and help.”
Alabama has seen its obesity rate double in the past 15 years, and the state has been named the second most obese in the nation. With more than 30 medical conditions associated with obesity, adopting a healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of developing such diseases.
Throughout the next eight weeks, Huntsville families are encouraged to put down the TV remote, turn off the video games, and rediscover fitness activities that are fun and good for physical and mental health.
To jump-start the summer challenge, a Healthy Huntsville Fitness and Nutrition Expo will be held in Big Spring Park East on Saturday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This event is free to the public and will include exercise and nutrition classes on four stages. Families can try Zumba, yoga, dance, Tai Chi, boot camp, tumbling, and crossfit training. The expo will have cooking demonstrations and a farmer’s market along with health and fitness vendors, children’s activities and more.
For staying power, the Summer Slim-Down program will continue to challenge families to lose weight, eat better, and have fun while doing it. To participate, teams of four, ages 12 and older, register and have their initial weigh in at any of the following sites: Brahan Spring Recreation Center, Fern Bell Recreation Center, Optimist Recreation Center, Dr. Richard Showers Sr. Recreation Center, Downtown YMCA, and Huntsville Hospital Wellness Centers during the week of June 1 – 9. Weigh-out is July 29 - August 4. Teams that lose the highest percentage of weight will be eligible for prizes, which include gym memberships and personal training sessions.
“We are excited about this summer opportunity for families, and we appreciate our partners in the Healthy Huntsville Initiative for helping us continue to fight obesity and improve wellness,” said Kevin Ready, Program Manager for Huntsville Hospital Medical Mall Wellness Center.
