A number of hardworking Queenslanders have been acknowledged for their contribution to protecting the state’s most vulnerable children at today’s launch of Child Protection Week, which runs from 5 –11 September.
(PressZoom) - A number of hardworking Queenslanders have been acknowledged for their contribution to protecting the state’s most vulnerable children at today’s launch of Child Protection Week, which runs from 5 –11 September.
Child Safety Minister Phil Reeves has congratulated eight award winners at a special ceremony at Parliament House.
“Child Protection Week is the perfect opportunity to publicly acknowledge the efforts, commitment and unreserved energy of many people who make a significant contribution to our community to prevent child harm and neglect,” Mr Reeves said.
“Our award winners come from very different backgrounds but they all share a common commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Queensland children.
“They also provide an outstanding example to the rest of Queensland by embodying the theme of Child Protection Week – Protecting children is everybody’s business’.
“I would like to congratulate all award winners and thank them for their exceptional efforts and commitment to working towards ensuring the wellbeing of our children in Queensland communities.”
Child Protection Week Awards were offered to individuals or groups in seven categories: Professional (Non-government), Professional (Government), Volunteers, Regional Programs, Education Initiatives, Youth Participation and Media.
2010 award recipients included:
Professional (non-government) Award – Ms Lisa Hillan, Program Manager, Save the Children (Brisbane)
Professional (government) Award – Ms Anne Gray, Senior ATSI Health Worker, Queensland Health (Cairns)
Volunteer Award – Mr Denis Loaney, Executive Chairman, ACT for Kids (Brisbane)
Regional Program Award – Skirmishing the Youth, Sgt Clinton Ryan and
Sen.Con. Michael Maguire, Charleville Police (Charleville)
Education Initiative Award – Student Protection Training Package, Mr David Hutton, Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Brisbane (Brisbane)
Youth Participation Award – Kids Living Safer Lives Program (KLSL), AFL Cape York, Indigenous Coordination Centre, Queensland Police Service (Far North Queensland)
Media Award – Ms Francis Whiting,Journalist (Brisbane)
Special Recognition Certificate of Appreciation for valuable voluntary work by a young person – Jessica Ryan, Young Consultant, CREATE Foundation (Brisbane)
Mr Reeves said Child Protection Week recognises the dedication of Queensland’s child protectionprofessionals, volunteers, and organisations.
“It’s not only an opportunity to recognise individuals but also acknowledge the valuable collaboration between government and non-government organisations in working towards ensuring child protection,” he said.
“I would like to acknowledge the agencies with an interest in child protection and thank them for their tireless contribution to keeping Queensland kids safe.”
Child Protection Week is a national celebration promoting the belief that protecting children is everybody’s business and offers a statewide forum for addressing the issue of child harm and neglect.
The Bligh Government is providing more than $100,000 towards Child Protection Week to fund community-based events across the state.
