(PressZoom) - Local Government Minister Desley Boyle today announced more than $4.5 million in disaster funding to help Whitsunday Regional Council meet the cost of emergency repairs required in the aftermath of cyclones earlier this year.
“The flip side to our beautiful climate is the tremendous destruction cyclone season can bring and 2010 certainly ticked that box,” Ms Boyle said.
“Tropical Cyclone Ului and other storms that swept through the region between January and April left a trail of destruction in their wake.”
Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt welcomed the funding.
“After the cyclones Whitsunday Regional Council got on with the job and ensured emergency works and post-disaster repairs were carried out quickly enabling residents to get their lives back to normal,” Ms Jarratt said.
“Council workers removed debris and vegetation from roads, carried out access grading, pavement repairs, replaced culverts and drainage structures and repaired washouts and landslips.
“The full cost of these repairs would have had a significant impact on ratepayers if Council had been left to meet the total cost of the repairs.
“The joint State and Federal Government funded Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements mean Councils can get on with the job of repairing essential infrastructure in the aftermath of natural disasters."
Repairs included:
·$1,818,338 – debris and vegetation removal
·$1,068,209 – grading and access works
·$410,989 – pavement repairs
·$420,829 – bridge, culvert and drainage repairs
·$227,784 – clearing landslips and washouts
·$704,519 – repairs to parks and gardens.”
“Whitsunday Regional council has also played its part contributing $247,000 towards the cost of repairs,” Ms Jarratt said.
Since January 2009, the Bligh Government has committed more than $418 million to help Councils across Queensland rebuild in the wake of natural disasters.
