(PressZoom) - Police Minister Neil Roberts and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson have today announced the appointment of Ross Barnett APM to the role of Deputy Commissioner, Specialist Operations, within the Queensland Police Service.
Mr Roberts said Mr Barnett brought considerable national and international experience to the role, as well as extensive investigative experience.
“I congratulate Mr Barnett on his appointment and wish him well in his new role,” Mr Roberts said.
“Mr Barnett has been Assistant Commissioner State Crime Operations since July 2008. Earlier this year, he was seconded to the position of Assistant Commissioner Metro North Region for several months.
“This appointment will signal the start of a new and exciting chapter in Mr Barnett’s long and distinguished career with the Queensland Police Service, and I look forward to working with him.”
Mr Barnett graduated Dux of his squad from the academy in 1976, as well as winning the Leadership award. His career includes many key postings in State Crime Operation areas including the Drug investigation unit and he was the first Director of the Child Safety and Sexual Crime Group.
In addition, he has had several important secondments to external State and Commonwealth agencies including the Australian Crime Commission, the Queensland Crime Commission and the National Crime Authority.
In addition to being awarded the Australian Police Medal in 2007, Mr Barnett was in 1997 the recipient of the Geoffrey Bowen Memorial Award, the highest individual honour awarded annually by the National Crime Authority.
He has twice been awarded the QPS Commissioner’s Certificate (1992 and 1993) once for the recapture of violent escapee and armed robber Harold John Sweeney. Mr Barnett suffered a gunshot wound in this incident.
In 2003, Mr Barnett completed the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Virginia, and is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership program at the Australian Institute of Police Management in Manly.
He holds an undergraduate Degree in Justice Administration and a Masters in Public Policy and Administration as well as a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia.
Commissioner Atkinson congratulated Mr Barnett on his appointment, which will take effect on 3 October and wished him well in his new role.
“Ross Barnett is a professional police officer of the first calibre, and is a well respected leader and member of the Senior Executive Service.
“He is typical of the new generation of senior officers – educated and credentialed, and he brings a global understanding and awareness to the role,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart will take over responsibilities for Regional Operations, the role vacated by Deputy Commissioner Kathy Rynders earlier this year when she commenced pre-retirement leave.
