FIVE CHRISTIAN NON-PROFITS AND THINK TANKS TO SPONSOR PANEL SERIES ON IMMIGRATION REFORM
Immigration is a topic without borders. This fall, five non-profits and think tanks are sponsoring three free panel discussions to examine immigration reform. The series will feature leading Christian experts discussing the relationship between immigration and three key topics: social integration, the workforce, and security.
(PressZoom) - Immigration is a topic without borders. This fall, five non-profits and think tanks are sponsoring three free panel discussions to examine immigration reform. The series will feature leading Christian experts discussing the relationship between immigration and three key topics: social integration, the workforce, and security.
The panels will be held in the Hart Senate Office Building on September 22 (room 902), October 13 (room tba), and November 3 (room tba). Each evening will begin with light refreshments and a networking reception at 6:30pm. The moderated panel discussion will begin at 7:00pm and will be followed by Q&A.
The five co-sponsors of the panel discussions are the Institute for Public Service & Policy Development (I.P.S.), the Center for Public Justice (CPJ), the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE), the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC).
The first panel discussion, on Wednesday, September 22, will focus on how immigrants are integrated into society and will be moderated by Kim Lawton, host of Religion and Ethics Newsweekly on PBS. Lawton is an award-winning reporter, producer, writer, and editor. Panelists will include Charles Olmeda, Pennsylvania state chapter director of the NHCLC; Kevin Appleby, director of migration policy for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops; Jenny Hwang, associate at World Relief and author of Welcoming the Stranger; and Gabriel Salguero, pastor of Lamb's Church in New York.
The second panel discussion, on Wednesday, October 13, will focus on immigrants in the workforce and will be moderated by Michel Martin, host of the radio news and talk show Tell Me More on National Public Radio (NPR). Panelists will include Galen Carey, director of government affairs for NAE; Carol Swain, professor at Vanderbilt University; James Edwards, fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies; and Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
The third panel discussion, on Wednesday, November 3, will address immigration and security and will be moderated by Galen Carey of the NAE. Carey represents the NAE before Congress, the White House, and the Courts. Panelists will include Jen Smyers, associate at Church World Service; Kyle Longely, professor at Arizona State University; Mark Tooley, president of the Institute for Religion and Democracy; and Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University's School of Law.
