(PressZoom) - WASHINGTON - As Hurricane Earl, now a Category 1 storm, moves northeast and away from North Carolina today, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urges continued caution for North Carolina residents. FEMA continues to work with its federal partners, as well as state and local officials, in order to ensure safety and security for North Carolina residents.
"We are extremely pleased that initial reports from our teams in North Carolina and Virginia show that Hurricane Earl passed without causing a severe level of damage," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "However, dangerous conditions may still exist, including floods, downed power lines, mudslides and hazardous materials. The after-effects of a major storm can be just as dangerous as the storm itself. To make sure that no one is hurt or in harm's way, we still encourage North Carolina residents to be careful as they emerge from or return to their homes."
Over the past week, FEMA has taken swift action in order to ensure that North Carolina state and local officials had the resources needed to prepare for and respond to the effects of Hurricane Earl. In advance of the storm, FEMA deployed an Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) to North Carolina to support state and local officials and activated the National Response Coordination Center and several Regional Response Coordination Centers. FEMA had also pre-positioned 400,000 liters of water, 300,000 meals, and 54 generators to an Incident Support Base (ISB) location in North Carolina.
On Wednesday, September 1, President Obama signed a pre-landfall emergency declaration for North Carolina, making federal funding available to support state efforts to save lives and protect property. Administrator Fugate has briefed President Obama several times this week on FEMA's preparations for Hurricane Earl. FEMA will continue to monitor Hurricane Earl and coordinate with its local, state and federal partners to ensure the safety and security of North Carolina residents, as they return to their homes and their lives.
Information on what individuals and families can do to prepare for an emergency is available at Ready.gov. A Spanish version of the website is available at Listo.gov.
FEMA's mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
