Northern Iowa beat the number one tournament seeded team from Kansas by the score of 69-67on Saturday. Northern Iowa's Ali Farokhmanesh advanced the team to next weekend's Sweet Sixteen tournament. Many bracketology experts had Kansas going on to the National Championship but their dreams have been ruined this year. With Northern Iowa ahead by one point, Farokhmanesh made a crucial and risky three pointer that put them ahead for good.
In a matchup that left both players bruised and battered by the end of the game, Kansas State’s Jacob Pullen outscored BYU’s Jimmer Fredette 34 to 21, leading the Wildcats into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1988. Playing on the same court in Oklahoma City that had just been the site of Northern Iowa’s shocking upset of Kansas, BYU was gunning to make it two straight upsets of Big 12 teams.
They got off to a quick start, taking a 10-0 lead to begin the game. From there, Pullen got hot, scoring 20 points in the first half as K-State took a 41-31 advantage. BYU threatened to make the game close in the second half, pulling to within five points on multiple occasions, but it seemed that whenever they got within striking distance, Pullen would make another big shot. Pullen finished 8-15 from the field, including 7-12 shooting from 3-point range.
