NEW YORKER'S BEGIN PAINTING A WOODEN ROWBOAT THAT WILL BE USED TO ROW ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN FOR AIDS
(PressZoom) - WHAT: In commemoration of World AIDS Day: Stop AIDS Keep the Promise, a diversified group of New Yorkers Keep their Promise in the fight against AIDS.
WHY: In February, Victor Mooney looks to begin his 8,000 mile solo trans Row which will start from Goree Island, Senegal (West Africa) and end at the Brooklyn Bridge. Mooney estimates it will take about eight months. Mooneyˇ¦s goal is to encourage Abstinence, Prevention and AIDS Education as tools for fighting this disease.
According to the UN, sub-Saharan Africa has about 25 million HIV/AIDS patients. New York City, where Mooney will end his trip, has about 40,000 African American HIV/AIDS patients, the most of any ethnic group according to city health department figures.
WHO: With loosing one brother to AIDS and another HIV +, Mooney (41) of Woodhaven, New York, have been rowing the waters around Long Island in four consecutive years. Mooney is a communications officerer at ASA ˇV The College for Excellence, which is located in Brooklyn, New York.
