(PressZoom.com) - ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Osteoporosis affects 25 million Americans and causes more than 1.3 million fractures of the wrist, vertebrae and hips each year.

In order to raise awareness about this disease and its potential effects, the Women’s Health Program and the MFit Health Education Resource Center at the University of Michigan Health System will host the health talk “Osteoporosis: Prevention and Management” on Wednesday, June 25. The event will take place from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the Ypsilanti District Library, located at 5577 Whittaker Road in Ypsilanti.

The seminar will focus on prevention and management tips for women who already have osteoporosis and for those who simply wish to learn more about it. Lori Trudeau, registered dietitian at U-M, will discuss the importance of nutrition in preventing osteoporosis and give tips on how to include more calcium into a daily diet. Priya Mehta, U-M physical therapist, will then discuss a range of topics— including posture awareness, proper body mechanics for daily activities and exercise do’s and don’ts. A question and answer session with the experts will follow.

Debbi Smith, coordinator of the Women’s Health Resource Center at U-M Health System, explains that this event is important because it makes reliable information accessible to women seeking answers concerning their health.

“There is so much information out there on the Internet, which can often be overwhelming. Health talks such as this are important because they give women the opportunity to receive information face-to-face from credible sources,” Smith says.

The health talk is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. To register to attend, please call the U-M Women’s Health Resource Center at 734-936-8886 or email UMHS-WHRC@umich.edu.
