The University of Cambridge has announced the proposed appointment of Professor Arnoud De Meyer, a leading figure in business school management, as the new Director of its Judge Business School, from September 2006. The nomination of Professor De Meyer follows an extensive international search and selection process. He will succeed Professor Dame Sandra Dawson, who has led the School since 1995.

Professor De Meyer has been at INSEAD - a leading international business school with campuses in Europe (France) and Asia (Singapore) - since 1983, and is currently Deputy Dean. In 1999, De Meyer became the founding Dean of INSEAD’s hugely successful campus in Asia (Singapore) and returned to France in 2002 to take up the post of Deputy Dean and Dean of Administration and External Relations at INSEAD.

Arnoud De Meyer graduated from the University of Ghent with a degree in Electrical Engineering and began his career with Essochem, followed by a PhD in Technical Management at the University of Ghent. During his doctoral studies he was a visiting fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined INSEAD in 1983, becoming Associate Dean of the INSEAD MBA Programme from 1990-1992 and Associate Dean of the INSEAD Executive Education programme from 1992-1999, while taking on the Directorship of the Euro-Asia Centre in 1995. At the time, the Centre was a quasi-independent research and executive education centre within INSEAD. At the request of INSEAD’s Board he undertook a feasibility study and a strategic analysis to find out if establishing a full fledged campus in Singapore was viable and at the end of 1998 he went to Singapore as the Founding Dean. The Asia campus is now extremely successful with over 300 MBA students starting there per year.
Judge Business School was founded in 1990 as the Judge Institute of Management Studies. The School changed its name to Judge Business School in July 2005 following an extensive strategic review facilitated by McKinsey and supported by secondments from BP, WPP, Allen & Overy and other members of its prestigious Advisory Board, chaired by Lord Browne of Madingley.
Judge Business School sits at the heart of the University of Cambridge and works with colleagues in many departments and disciplines within the university for multi-disciplinary teaching and research.Judge Business School offers a portfolio of undergraduate, graduate and executive management programmes, including the Cambridge MBA, and has over 300 students and 80 faculty and research staff. The Cambridge MBA is a full time, intensive 1 year programme which was ranked 1st in the UK and 20th in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit in September 2005. Judge Business School received a five rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

Professor Sandra Dawson was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire for her services to higher education and business research in 2004. She announced when she agreed to a third and final term that she did not wish to extend her period of office as Director beyond September 2006. She will remain a Professor at Judge Business School and Master of Sidney Sussex College. She commented: “I can think of no-one I would rather see at the helm of Judge Business School. Professor De Meyer’s commitment to international business education and longstanding interest and expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship are a perfect fit for us as we build our great business school at the heart of Cambridge”.
The appointment is subject to the formal approval of the Regent House, the community of Cambridge’s senior academic and administrative staff.
